‘Winter Haikus’ by George Szirtes

Side A

Track One

Day iced in sunlight
air settling like cellophane
on the unwrapped streets

Track Two

Yet it’s the best thing,
this winter sun, like something
just now invented!

Track Three

Christmas and New Year:
a double dip recession
set with fairy lights.

Track Four

On the magazine rack
fifty-four female faces,
every one smiling.

Track Five
They smiled there last week
and the week before: no-one
has seen them frowning.

Side B

Track One

Morning radio:
a slow heaving into day,
a turning over.

Track Two

The sense of the self
as particle, component,
as rain on the roof.

Track Three

Cats were modest then.
I blame TV and the cult
of celebrity.

Track Four

You watch them prepare
for a night out on the town
drinking at all hours.

Track Five

You’re not going out
looking like that, I tell mine.
Do they listen? No.
